Rabbi Mimi Weisel
Adjunct Rabbi
Rabbi Mimi Weisel is delighted to be part of the rabbinic staff at Temple Emanu-El, a vibrant and welcoming community.
After retiring from full time rabbinic duties, she moved from California to Sarasota to be with her son, Rabbi Michael Shefrin, Associate Rabbi at Temple Emanu-El, and his family.
She is privileged to continue to bring her skills and passions to the Temple, teaching and providing spiritual and pastoral care.
In her rabbinic career she served as a Hospice Spiritual Care Counselor/Chaplain and Bereavement Counselor in Northern California, Rabbi-in-Residence at the Jewish Community High School of the Bay in San Francisco, Assistant Dean at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies at the American Jewish University in Los Angeles, and Director of Jewish Education and Continuity at the Dave & Mary Alper Jewish Community Center in Miami.
Rabbi Weisel also has been a volunteer leader. She chaired the Sarasota Jewish Hospice Support Program; served as the Senior Rabbinic Partner to Hasidah, providing support for infertility in the Jewish community; chaired the Shalom Bayit Rabbinic Advisory Committee in San Francisco, and facilitated support groups for women who are victims of domestic violence. She also has been a staff member of the Bay Area Jewish Healing Center’s Grief and Growing Bereavement Camp, served various synagogues in part-time rabbinic roles, and provided volunteer leadership as a board and committee member in the healthcare and Jewish communities.
Prior to entering the Rabbinate, Rabbi Weisel worked in the corporate environment administering career development programs in the aerospace industry. Ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1998, she also earned a BA in Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles, as well as additional credentials and certificates.
